Heatwave Alchemy

If you live in the UK, or almost anywhere in Europe for that matter, chances are you’ve been cursing the extreme heat episodes we’ve been having these past few weeks.

Maybe you’re showering several times a day, or buying a small army of £20 fans, or rethinking your entire apartment layout because your office is scalding hot like mine.

I’m writing this from my living room, which is also where I’m having to sleep for the next couple of months. Blame the huge windows that were a total selling point upon moving, which have turned my bedroom into a 35℃ greenhouse—I dream of Texan nights with overcompensating A/C.

But not all that came from these heatwaves was bad. For example, it opened up opportunities in architectural energetics.

I also found myself going for a long walk to catch the cool air and low tide. Funny thing is, I’ve lived by the coast for a while and never just stumbled into one. But that first better morning, I did—on a whim.

So, while watching most people complain about the heat on social media, I started wondering: what are its positive effects? Both from a biological and alchemical standpoint?

Assuming we’re well hydrated, that we’re not exhausting ourselves, that we’re taking all the precautions to stay as cool as possible—what does a little extra heat do to the physical body? And to our energy body?

In the Flesh

When your body starts sweating in the heat, it’s not just cooling off. You’re also releasing water-soluble toxins—things like BPA, phthalates, and trace heavy metals like mercury and arsenic. It’s not your main detox pathway—that’s still the job of your liver and kidneys—but sweating can help lighten the load in a small, specific way.

There’s also a cardiovascular shift that happens when you’re exposed to high temperatures. Your heart speeds up, your blood vessels dilate, and circulation increases to help shed heat. In healthy bodies, that process mimics a light workout. The system’s adapting under gentle pressure; a kind of training ground for vascular resilience, so long as you’re not overdoing it.

Metabolically, the body also kicks into gear. It starts burning more calories just to stay cool, causing a subtle uptick in energy expenditure. It’s nothing like a spin class, but the body’s still hustling. Underneath that, the chemistry rebalances, and more complex shifts unfold—especially in glucose metabolism and insulin response.

Then there’s what’s happening on a cellular level. Heat exposure can trigger something called heat shock proteins—molecular repair crews that jump in when cells are stressed. These proteins help patch damage and regulate inflammation, which is why saunas, when used regularly, have been linked to lower inflammation markers and even better cardiovascular health. The heat stresses you just enough to wake the body’s internal healers.

And the skin? It responds too. Pores open, oils surface, grime loosens. Think of it as a soft purge—a steam-clean, though not without limits. Too much heat can cause irritation, flare-ups, imbalance. But in moderation, it’s a chance for the skin to exhale.

On the Subtle Plane

There’s also a metaphysical layer to the possible benefits of heat exposure.

Traditional Eastern systems—like Chinese medicine—link elemental forces to specific physiological and energetic effects. Nothing in nature is without meaning; each season and its corresponding element carries its own function and intelligence.

Fire = Transformation

In alchemy, heat is the agent of change—it cooks the dross out of base material. So metaphorically, a heatwave becomes the body’s crucible. Old emotions, stuck patterns, latent toxins—all rise to the surface.

Yang Surge

Heat is also conceptualized as yang energy. It activates, energizes, and stirs things up. You might feel more restless, expressive, or irritable, as fire moves you out of stagnation—and contrary to popular belief, change is good. It’s momentum.

Emotional Purging

People tend to “boil over” during heatwaves—that’s the heat shaking loose repressed feelings. Think: emotional detox at full blast, especially when Cancer season rolls around. Tears, tempers, and truths come out. Illusions drop. You start seeing things exactly as they are, for better or worse.

Solar Energy Download

If you’re in tune with the subtle body, you know the sun charges your system—especially the solar plexus, your power center. Heat sharpens clarity, confidence, drive—all of which can all lead to breakthroughs.

So yes, a heatwave can be uncomfortable—but if you’re safe, hydrated, and not pushing it, it’s one of nature’s forced resets. An upgrade, ultimately.

Don’t fight the fire, flow with it.
