The Hidden Carcinogens in Our Water

Six haloacetic acids (HAAs), which are organic by-products of chlorine or bromine-based disinfectants formed when reacting with organic matter—such as humic acid—in water, have been identified as possible cancer-causing substances.

Exposure to HAAs occurs when using community water systems (CWS), i.e. tap water, by drinking beverages and eating food cooked in, or in contact with, the source water.

External contacts, such as bathing in chlorine or bromine-treated water in swimming pools, hot tubs, or spas, is another route of exposure.
