When I asked my entourage if they liked the idea of living extra long lives, they all had the same reaction: “Sure, though only if I get to be fit like a 60-year-old in old age!”
This is where the longevity research field is making strides: adding quality years to our life instead of just lengthening it. So, scientists are trying to “upgrade” our DNA by changing which and how much longevity genes activate and when.
In smaller mammals, they can already alter the entire trajectory of aging via a permanent genetic reset. Gene therapy, as is done on mice, makes their organs and cells think and act like they’re young again–artificially creating the mirage of a brand new body and instructions to maintain it.
If the idea of applying this knowledge to humans sounds like science fiction to you, wait to hear all the natural and measurable ways available to us to rewrite our genetic code. The choice to age gracefully and disease-free has been in our hands this whole time.
